Street level DIY, Yigal Alon, Tel Aviv
2014
With Noga Oren & Neta Katz
Between east and west Tel Aviv a clear gap opens, a “river of cars”, Ayalon highway. the human scale, which characterizes the western part of the city changes in the eastern border to an industrial surrounding, without any sense of healthy urbanism.
We used Yigal Alon street as a case study for a future environment of high-rise buildings. Through it we created planning tools for the street level (-5 to +10), as a base for social activities and vibrant city life, together with closing the gap between the eastern and western part of the city. Those tools are The Horizontal shared space, which deals with the borders between pedestrians and roads activities, and The Vertical shared spaces, which deals with the meeting point of a building and the street, uses wasted public spaces and creates live and active street level, both open and close, with a verity of programs.
The planning creates a transition between different scales, from a single building, through covering the Ayalon highway, to strengthening metropolitan connectivity.
By breaking and reconstructing the boundaries of existing programs and structures, we redifine the term “Public” in order to plan the street of the 21st century.
